Departments join hands for smart cities in West Bengal

The state government is working on converging different initiatives to develop four smart cities in the state. Officials from departments like urban development, home, transport, health, power, IT and those from Webel, CII, Nasscom and other consultants attended a meeting last today to discuss on the issue.

The state is preparing a plan for New Town, Salt Lake, Asansol and Durgapur, which have been selected and included in the centre’s list for the smart city project. A smart seminar for Salt Lake was also organized on Saturday and it was attended by experts from various fields and representatives from different business chambers. It has been planned that residents’ views would be taken into consideration to develop Salt Lake as a smart city .

The state is likely to receive investments from US-based companies for the development of the proposed smart cities. Representatives of American Chamber of Commerce in India (AmCham India) will soon meet representatives of different urban local bodies and consultants to discuss the plans for the smart cities and theme townships. A state delegation also recently discussed with AmCham India on ways as to how US companies can partner with the four smart city projects.

Union urban development minister Venkaiah Naidu held a workshop in Kolkata on Saturday to discuss how Smart Cities can be developed in West Bengal.

The four civic bodies of Salt Lake, New Town, Haldia and Durgapur will shortly start preparing blueprint for the Smart City project which will have to be submitted to Centre by November. The urban development ministry will start releasing funds under the scheme only after getting the project blueprints.

A national workshop will also be organized in Delhi in October to discuss about the preparation of blueprints for Smart Cities across the country.

State urban development minister Firhad Hakim on Saturday made an appeal to Naidu to include Kolkata in the Smart City project. However, Naidu later said that for now, funds would be released only for the towns that have already been selected.

In the first phase, the Centre will release funds for 20 Smart Cities across the country out of the 98 towns that have been selected for the scheme. The civic authorities of all the 98 selected towns will need to prepare a Smart City plan, based on which funds will be generated for the first 20 towns.

Hakim requested the Union minister to consider the state’s proposal to bring all municipal towns of Bengal under Centre’s new Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme. He also requested Naidu to increase the number of smart cities in the state.However, Naidu made it clear that funds for the Smart Cities would be generated only based on performance of the civic bodies.

OYO Rooms to expand to 1,500 plus rooms in east India by year end

The branded budget hotel network had started operations in Kolkata in April this year and had added over 300 rooms in 30 partner hotels. OYO Rooms is targetting over 1,500 rooms in east India by the end of the year with 150 partner properties, said Kavikrut, head of expansion at the company.

The company is targetting both leisure and business travellers in this part of the country. The rooms in Kolkata are spread across areas such as Ballygunge, Esplanade, Salt Lake, Jadavpur, Park Street, Alipore and Garia.

“Kolkata is important for us not just as a city by itself but also because it serves as a hub for us in the east. We will launch more cities in West Bengal as well as further in the east including Siliguri, Durgapur, Asansol, Darjeeling, Guwahati, Gangtok, Shillong. These launches will complete over the next 6 months,” he said.

OYO’s plan is to launch these cities and build a strong network of 500 hotels that will provide affordable and predictable stays across most popular locations of this region.

“The most popular tariff bands for the region will be akin to what we have seen nationally that is starting at Rs 999 with strong loyalty and popularity for properties that sell between Rs 1599 and Rs 2999,” he added.

OYO however is not targeted towards travelers only according to him.

“We have seen all kinds of interesting use-cases beyond tourists or business travellers. People locked out of their homes have stayed with us; people have stayed with us when there was no electricity at home; people burning the midnight oil in office and who didn’t want to travel far since they had to start office the next day, have stayed with us,” he said.

New Town in smart city Kolkata’s Salt Lake

The state government has proposed names of four municipality areas Salt Lake, New Town, Haldia and Durgapur which may come under the Centre’s ‘Smart City’ scheme in which 100 cities across the nation will be developed as smart cities.

48418451.cmsState urban development department had last week sent a proposal to the Union ministry urging it to include the four selected areas in its ‘Smart City’ plan. Once included, the state will receive central funds to develop these places as smart cities. These four areas were picked up from 59 municipalities after the Centre said only four municipalities from Bengal would be able to join the ‘Smart City’ scheme. A state-level high power committee was set up under the chief secretary that also comprised KMC mayor and several administrative department principal secretaries to look into the selection process.

The municipalities were asked to prepare a report describing the civic infrastructure they have now and how much infrastructural facilities they would be able to provide if they were named smart cities.

Based on the reports, the state officials gave marks based on which Salt Lake, New Town, Durgapur and Haldia were selected. “The proposal for including the four municipality areas has been sent to the Centre for consideration,” said a senior government official.

During the recent London trip, senior government officials visited a number of places in London, including the office of ‘Transport for London’, to receive tips on how smart transport system in the state can be developed.

Salt Lake, New Town, Durgapur and Haldia have been selected for the central scheme.
