“Kolkata has just joined the league of C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (a network of the world’s megacities committed to addressing climate change) and we are using this opportunity to help newer avenues open up in the city,” said West Bengal state urban development minister Firhad Hakim.

“The plan to have a mono rail is just one of few ideas we have for New Town. We would also want the mono rails to come up in the city’s IT zone Sector V of Salt Lake. Since this is a huge opportunity to interact with experts from other global cities to upgrade civic facilities, the state government would focus more on upgrading the city’s transport system,” he added.

The mono rail in all likelihood would be connected with the metro rails said the urban development minister

The project plan is ready with the government and will be implemented once New Town’s population starts increasing. “The population of New Town is yet to achieve its potential. For the survival of such projects there needs to be enough user. The project will take off once we have the right numbers,” said Hakim.

Spread on a land parcel of more than 20 acres, there would be 5,000 apartments spread over 24 towers.

Each of the themes would have a symbolic structure relevant to the city it is themed on. The London themed unit would have a replica of Tower Bridge, that of Paris would have a dummy Eiffel Tower. The branded budget hotel network had started operations in Kolkata in April this year and had added over 300 rooms in 30 partner hotels.

The company is targetting both leisure and business travellers in this part of the country. The rooms in Kolkata are spread across areas such as Ballygunge, Esplanade, Salt Lake, Jadavpur, Park Street, Alipore and Garia.

“Kolkata is important for us not just as a city by itself but also because it serves as a hub for us in the east. We will launch more cities in West Bengal as well as further in the east including Siliguri, Durgapur, Asansol, Darjeeling, Guwahati, Gangtok, Shillong. These launches will complete over the next 6 months,” he said.

OYO’s plan is to launch these cities and build a strong network of 500 hotels that will provide affordable and predictable stays across most popular locations of this region.

“The most popular tariff bands for the region will be akin to what we have seen nationally that is starting at Rs 999 with strong loyalty and popularity for properties that sell between Rs 1599 and Rs 2999,” he added.

OYO however is not targeted towards travelers only according to him.

“We have seen all kinds of interesting use-cases beyond tourists or business travellers. People locked out of their homes have stayed with us; people have stayed with us when there was no electricity at home; people burning the midnight oil in office and who didn’t want to travel far since they had to start office the next day, have stayed with us,” he said.
